Our seasonal espressos each come with their own story, which is part of what makes them so special. Here we take a closer look at the producers behind this coffee. A blend from Rwanda (Ruli) & Colombia (Inza) and very much a celebration of small scale producers. Most of the small-scale producers with whom the Ruli washing station works own less than a quarter of a hectare of land, where they cu...

We've said it before, but espresso is a fickle product and a tricky thing to get right, shot after shot, day after day in a busy café environment. With staff turnover, finding the time to train new baristas in the art of coffee making can be quite a challenge. So imagine what it would be like to have someone keeping a constant watch on the quality of your coffee...all day, everyday, monitoring ...

Around 15 years ago the Mahlkönig EK43 grinder took the coffee industry by storm! Its quality and reliability has stood the test of time and earned it a place on many barista's counter tops over the years and it has become somewhat of a classic within the industry. The design has remained fairly un-changed in recent years with the exception of some different colourways and slight modifications ...

The static 😂😂😂😂
Using my Clever watching a video about Clever Dripper.
thank you for this video, I couldn't find a singe other review of this or Nouva Simonelli MDH grinder anywhere on the web!
Great video ❤
Did you only look at it or did you also use it? Sorry, but this review is completely useless and feels more like an ad than anything else.
I use a hemp filter
if you look at the time since its inception and divide the development potential by the years, you can't look at the new EK as anything other than a pathetic piece of shit... thanks for the video by the way ❤
I wouldn't be surprised if we could take it right out of the box to the local alignment adjuster guru
Great video. Planning on getting a Timemore press myself. just because its a great deal if you want a small french press for the road.
When will this be available? Your website still has Homer Cuchimba, but with no availability…
Which will be stronger in a milk drink?
Great video! Thank you 🙏
I could clearly see a clump in there...
i already bought it from home use and it cant grind coffee for espresso i think it was mean to be for filter coffee , i adjusted the burr to touching and am grinding just 1 click after that sound and still its not fine enough lol !
I’m interested in buying this grinder for home use to. It’s surprising to read that it can’t grind coffee for espresso. Did you find a solution. Thank you
@@joannismess if u r into 1:2 espresso ratio then it might be fine but am into long extractions and 1:1 or 1:1.5 and the omnia didnt really work for me i have return it and got my self E65DW grind by weight
Did it performed well in library mode? I’m interested in filter& espresso switching from one to another
You have to change your burr for the Turkish one. Like on the ek43 T stand for Turkish burr made for espresso
@@joannismess for filter i think it will be amazing , for espresso read my previous comment
How many Kg per roast load, would also be interested in seeing the computer graph of this roast, very much appreciate the commentary and particularly the "whys" for the target. How many "experimental" roasts does it usually take to achieve the "ideal" profile and do you do smaller batches for that? If so do they scale up easily? Does the grower get feedback?
Thanks for the insight into the process!
This was delicious from the first cup. Once I’d dialled it fine enough to knock back the slight notes of overextraction, it was absolutely delightful. My first Carvetii coffee, and just finished my last cup of this, but now I have Solitude being delivered. I think I’ll be working my way through this roastery’s full range, and it’s the first time I’ve actually considered a subscription!
It was all going well until the milk appeared.
Really interesting video. I had no idea stuff like this went on behind the scenes! Will you be reintroducing any of your courses soon? I just moved up here, and was delighted to find you're really relatively local to me!
Very interesting! I have one in back order (from another supplier - I only found you last week!). I’m surprised extraction time went down. What distribution technique did you use in the non-shakered cup?
Just opened my second bag of this, rich and very sweet as it cools down.
how does this grinder do with v60 grinds?
Hi this grinder won’t work for v60. It’s just an espresso grinder
When there is an eruption of light coffee, it is a sign that the water has washed away enough coffee to pass freely and simply release whatever pressure is left. Light, almost watery coffee at the end, this is evidence that the coffee has already been washed and is simply being re-extracted.
That looks like there was quite a bit of static. Is there a plasma generator in this unit?
There was some static build up which might settle as the unit gets used over time. I have no idea whether there is a plasma generator in the unit.
Unfortunately, some statics are caused by the lack of a plasma generator; otherwise, the static would not occur.
“Some” who are you kidding. And no the static won’t “settle” over time it’ll just build up. And what’s even more crazy is that’s the static generated on filter grounds. Imagine what it’ll be like on espresso. 😂😂😂
Looking at the "short" you posted there seems to be lot of static attracted to the outer delivery pipe, is that an accumulation or on each grind I wonder? If using single dose loading why not use the water spritz to reduce that, and how is that inner delivery tube working to reduce this, or is it not? All questions for the upcoming review post I hope despite this being out of my price bracket by a about a factor of 10 🤣 It would also be interesting to look at the accuracy and precision of that displayed grind size, does the burr come zeroed, I presume so, but then is it resettable I wonder and is that actual size really relevant, it looks good but could equally a number on a scale of 1-1000.
There does seem to be a static build up though less than my standard EK. To be honest in a commercial environment I personally would deal with the static and not worry about spritzing the beans. I have a feeling it might all settle down a bit once the unit has been used for a while. The burr can be reset. We manually adjust to touching and then recalibrate. This will need to be done periodically as the burrs wear. From a commercial point of view I’d love one at the Roastery as we typically move between 11 or 12 coffees at any one time, so the library mode would be very useful. Would I buy one for home use - no!
With luck the library mode will trickle down to domestic machines. For many years than I care to remember I have used an Iberital grinder which was marketed to small commercial use as a second decaf or small volume grinder, domestic grinder I have looked at seem to much like a play toy so I'm always interested in the commercial lines. Checked the plate and it was bought new in 2006 😱 and the parts are still available, I just replaced the delivery chute which had cracked, usable still but cosmetically annoying. Maybe I have had my money back?
@ChrisLivsey-dn6rz not bad if you’ve been running the same grinder for 18yrs. Ever changed the burrs?
No, not yet 😇 It's hard to find figures for none commercial machines but commercial seem to show, as I would expect, larger burrs last longer say 1,500Kg, 1,000Kg for smaller burrs. I use around 1 to 1.5 Kg a month so 12 to 18 Kg a year, a max of around 300Kg through. I've seen 500Kg quoted for smaller "domestic" machines, 38mm, I think though that the bearings etc would probably need attention by then as well so retirement after a life well lived? @@carvetiicoffee
@@carvetiicoffee fortunately i pre order this for home use 😂😂😂
Nicely done sir!
Thank you ☺️
Cracking video Gareth, love seeing you out in the outdoors
Thank you ☺️ Managed to get there at last. More stuff on the way I hope 🤞
Great video Gareth, we're off into the lakes and will be taking my Aeropress into the fells. The perfect way to drink great coffee on a wild camp, I'll be using your El Chinchin with a filter grind which I enjoy for its floral notes. Keep up the great content.
Really enjoyed the chinchin and quickly devoured my supply ☺️ Have a great time and thanks for the kind words 👍
Just had a cup brewed in the clever dripper and really enjoyed it, bitter sweet grapefruit, absolutely delicious
Barry thanks for the comments. Been enjoying the coffee myself all weekend 😁
How does Anfim Luna compared to Fiorenzato F64 Evo Pro..your pick?
I’ve used the Luna a lot and the Fiorenzato occasionally as some of our customers have these grinders. Personally it’s the Luna for me. I have never really enjoyed using the Fiorenzato. It might simply be a Android/Apple thing as I’ve been using Mahlkonig products for nearly 20 years (mahlkonig own Anfim and have updated their products to match their own styling).
Excellent video. Clarified a lot for me. Thank you
Thank you 😁
That is a beautiful thing 👌
I am looking to upgrade from my Sage Oracle Touch as recently the shot production is all over the place. I keep the beans in a airscape container the machine has been serviced and the upper burr grinder replaced as it seemed dull after 3 years of use. I am looking at going back to a separate espresso machine and grinder. I am looking at the Rocket Mozzafiato or the Cronometro type R is there much between them or is it just styling. Also I might just buy the grinder at first and wondered which one you might recommend or should I buy both at the same time. Sorry for the long winded message.
I’ve just replaced my old Giotto with a new Mozzafiato. They are identical inside and sell for the same price. It’s just a different look which is personal taste. I have also bought a new Mazzer Mini E grinder to replace my 10 year old grinder. Early days but very happy with both products. I do firmly believe that if you’re buying a machine like these particular Rocket ones it’s essential that you get a good grinder. Otherwise you’ll be disappointed in the output no matter how good your espresso machine. My other expensive hobby is home audio and the same principle applies. You’ve got to match the quality of your speakers to the amp.
With regards to rockets the term mozzafiato refers to the body design which is more square than the Giotto which is angular The cronometro refers to there being a shot timer which I think is essential Then type R is a reference to the rotary pump which is standard in commercial machines as opposed to the type V which you get in commercial machines. I prefer a rotary pump but it will come down to budget. Hope that helps clarify the models
Hey there, Thanks for presenting this tool! Is there a particular way on how to lift the inner part to distribute the grounds in best manner? Thanks!
Hi I honestly haven’t played around too much in that respect. I tend to lift and tap at the same time to slide the grounds into the portafilter.
Shouldn't the time be ratioed as well i.e. 16/18*25sec ?
Brew time remains consistent regardless of dose
@@carvetiicoffeeNo it doesn’t. That doesn’t make sense. More coffee requires more time to extract
No bloom?
I've had to grind this a bit coarser than usual and the flavour of that honeycomb comes through, love this one.
Thanks for the feedback - just been enjoying a cup earlier today 😁
One of my favourite blends, and not too hard to dial in
Like Vietnamese coffee . I really like your videos. Thanks for sharing.
Good Idea! Looks delicious!
I just got back from Thailand were they mixed espresso with a little cream and full fat milk to make a drink the size of a flat white they call a dirty. It was very good in the hot weather. They imported it from Japan I was told.
I’ll try this. Good for a morning energy shot
An excellent choice, one to savour slowly, deep and rich, reminds me of pacamara beans. I did find a slightly finer grind than I usually have for this level of roast for V60 was better tasting and slowed the rather faster than I like drawdown at my usual setting.
Glad you enjoyed the coffee and thanks for the feedback along with the brewing tips. We have a Colombian this month which might also prefer the same approach
who is your green coffee supplier?
We use a company called Mercanta
Great espresso machine, works great! Only thing, I hate green light on it.
I probably have to agree with you there 🟢!

Nicely done, thank you. I’ve been using the invert method for a few months now. I came here to know how long you keep it brewing before flipping and pushing it through. I was always just kinda arbitrarily doing it after what would seem like a couple minutes, but I wanted a more concrete time to shoot for. 90 seconds. Got it. One thing I do different from what you demonstrated is I use a metal screen filter. I appreciate the informative and succinct video!
Thanks for the feedback, very much appreciated. I have those metal filters as well - my finer one makes a much sweeter brew - but I often just grab the paper ones, not sure why!
In answer to Sawheel Gills question add a magnesium gummy to the pour over water and use aMellitta #2 filterbrown. This may help with the bitterness and turn bitter coffee into a rose! If this doesnt help it may.be the coffee itself is the problem. Magnesium is removed from city water in general. Why I dont know. If you reintroduce magnesium to the coffee brewing water it seems to extract flavor more roundly and efficiently. I got this information from a Haewaiian girl and she knew what she was talking about. Good coffee and Mahallow, my hawaiian name is Kikikicopa 😅😊😅
Should you have any troubles with stalled flowthrough may I suggest a jelly seive and pour the dry grind into the seive. Run the butt of a teaspoon around inside the grounds and tap them into a paper towel or toilet paper. Save the fines for making Turkish coffee. When the dry grounds are sifted use one table spoon of coffee and into freshly wetted paper filter. This proceedure should yield quick flow through and delicious coffee. Of course I use 3 tablespoons because that is how it is served in Wein Austria 4 star hotels. Its very strong and black and you can add a pat of butter. The butter will deliver the caffeine slowly throughout the day. I like Italian roast it is blacker yet more delicately licorice than French roast. If i run out of gourmet coffee I also like M.J.B. or Youban. Hope this helps bye!
